Rando: Cauterets balconies, 3 walks or trails to chain

Chalet La Source Cauterets Village Chemin des PèresDo you have half a day in front of you for beautiful mountain walks? Here are three routes from the La Source chalet, which will make you discover the valley by the Balcons de Cauterets.
The most athletic will be able to browse them in Trail mode and even chain them, it is one of the circuits of the famous Balcons de Cauterets .

Please note these routes can be difficult or even impracticable in winter or early spring: inquire with the Office de la Montagne de Cauterets - Tel 05 62 91 02 83

The chalet of Queen Hortense (6.7 km, 2h00, D+ 250m)

Chalet La Source Cauterets Reine HortenseThis walk in the forest without difficulty, will bring you to this site where Queen Hortense herself spent the night, and take a nice gourmet break in the city of Cauterets.

The chalet, which was once a barn, is today a hotel and a restaurant. Queen Hortense , during her stay in Cauterets in August 1807, found refuge there with her guide, when they were surprised by the storm on the return of Luz by the Col de Riou. Rumor says that Napoleon III was designed, since he was born just 9 months later ...

Chalet La Source Cauterets View Reine HortenseThis site offers a magnificent view of the Cauterets valley, the Péguère massif on the left (2316m), the Lys circus , the Moun born (2724m) and the Pic du Cabaliros on the right (2334m).

Take the path behind the thermal baths of Caesar , whose laces take you to the old thermal baths of Pauze-Vieux .

Chalet La Source Cauterets Cabane du BousquetHere, turn left on the old road which goes towards the valley (on the right it is the mockery).

We then pass the pretty cabin of Bousquet , where the branch is located towards the Lisey plateau. We find there the GR10, and we continue on the left until crossing the small bridge of La Gorce . The track climbs again, in the forest, on a large path in laces which leads to the chalet of Queen Hortense.

The quickest return is by the same path , but if you have more time, a loop route is possible by going back down to the Carcéru district , which adds 1km and 45 minutes. Once reached the hotel industry of Queen Hortense, instead of going back down, we continue the climb to join a path that descends on the left. The slope in laces being quite steep, the walking sticks will be welcome. We then join Pont de Fanlou where we cross the Gave de Cauterets, then go up to the avenue du Mamelon Green.

The Basque farm and the Igau farm (5.2 km - 2:15 am - D+ 320m)

The Basque farm and the Igau farm offer two magnificent views of the Cauterets valley from its western slope, to the Lutour valley to the south and the Viscos ridges. A ride to do preferably in the morning, to benefit from sunshine.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Belvédère AoumèdeLeaving the chalet La Source, we take the avenue du Mamelon Green on the left, and behind the chestnut trees, we turn left on the small road then the Aoumède path.
The path then climbs quite strong, in the forest, and leads to an esplanade, near the Igau farm (altitude 1090 m). Your efforts are rewarded by view from this Aoumède belvedere .
We then go up on the path on the other side of the road, towards the Basque farm. After a new pretty point of view near a barn , this path becomes a path in the forest, with two small streams to be overhauled.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Farm BasqueThe path then descends to the Basque farm (altitude 1200m), which is joined at the terrace of the Auberge. This is the second belvedere of this hike!

From there, to descend the access path to the Basque farm, then to the left along the edge of the Cambasque road over about 250 meters: there is then on the left the departure of the Arresto path , marked out in red and white ( GR10). This path descends directly to Cauterets, approaching the Gave du Cambasque .

The Tour du Vallon Thermal (6 km - 2h30 - D+ 760m)

This walk takes you to the rail by Chemin Demontzey, back by the Chemin des Fères, passing by all the current or old thermal establishments in Cauterets.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Sentier DemontzeyFrom the La Source chalet, descend the avenue du Mamelon Green to the right, to the blue chalet. Here, climb the staircase that leads to the sculpted eagle, the starting point on Chemin Demontzey.

This path on the side of the slope, bears the name of Prosper Demontzey , engineer who led at the end of the 19th century the immense consolidation works of Mount Peguère , whose erosion threatened (already at the time) the thermes of La Raillère .

Chalet La Source Cauterets La Raillère
By this path, we access the esplanade of the old thermal baths in La Raillère . The path then becomes a small road which leads to the area of shops and cafes. We cross the Gave du Marcadau which descends along the thermal baths of the Griffons .

Here, take the time to go see the curious MAHOURAT cave and the Mahourat waterfall , just a little higher. From the imposing and curious worked grid, we can clearly see the old "thermal refreshment bar" where the sulfur source arrived. The sulfur odor is well noticeable, reinforced by the water vapor from the waterfall.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Chemin des FèresNext to the restaurant L'Arford du Benquès on the other side of the thermal baths, we leave the bitumen for a new path. Cross the Gave de Lutour , on the bridge by admiring the Lutour waterfall . Some pins higher (altitude 1190 m), turn left on the Fathers.

A name in memory of the monks which borrowed it at the time of the first thermal baths, founded in the Middle Ages by the monastery of Saint-Savin . Among the illustrious bathers Figura Marguerite de Navarre , sister of François 1st , whose memory is honored by a stele at the entrance to the thermal baths of César .

Chalet La Source Cauterets Pauze VieuxWe follow the Chemin des Fatère at length to descend to Cauterets, on the mountainside, in the forest. From beautiful views on the way, then the path descends towards Cauterets, passing by the old thermal baths of Pauze-Vieux , and leads behind the thermal baths of Caesar.

Along the way, you will find panels providing explanations on the gigantic consolidation works of the Mount Peguère piloted by Prosper Demontzey, and on the transport of large blocks of ice back on a man , from the Combe de la Glacière , at the top of the Mount Péguère, to the village of Cauterets. Another era!

Go! Les Balcons de Cauterets (16 km - 6:30 am)

The three previous chained courses form a beautiful and long loop, in a balcony above the village of Cauterets. It is a fairly long hike in D+/D-, but not very difficult except for the steep descent at the end.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Altimetric Profile Balconies

Start by making the loop to the Igau farm and the Basque farm.
On the return to Cauterets by the Arresto trail, turn right towards La Raillera and thus join the Demontzey chemin , to chain by the Tour du Vallon thermal.
On the return to the Chemin des Fères , at the thermal baths of Pauze Vieux, continue towards the Cabane du Bousquet then the chalet of Queen Hortense, then descend to the village by Canceru.

Rando: Spanish bridge, Gaube Lake, Oulettes refuge

Chalet La Source Cauterets Rando Lac de GaubeIn the heart of the National Park, classified as a large site of Occitanie,  the Pont d'Espagne and Lac de Gaube are wonders to see absolutely around Cauter Ets.

This hike in Gaube valley will take you to the foot of the highest peak of the French Pyrenees, the Pic du Vignemale.

You will be under the spell of this preserved nature, radiant with light in summer, crystalline in winter under its coat of snow.

What are you going to see during this hike?

Chalet La Source Cauterets Pont DespagneFrom the main bridge, you first admire the famous Spanish bridge : an old stone bridge (built in 1886) a vestige of a pastoral route by which trade in Spain used to be.

In a thunderous foam, this bridge marks the birth of the Gave de Jéret , at the confluence of the Gave du Marcadau and the Gave de Gauve .

Chalet La Source Cauterets Les HuatsGoing up to Lake Gaube, stop at Lac des Huats , formed by the Gave which spreads here thanks to a small tray.

Bordered by a large peat bog where life abounds, you will find traces of wild animals .

Do not forget your binoculars: on the steep meadows facing the huats, and further by going up to the refuge of the Oulettes, you can see marmots and Isards .

Chalet La Source Cauterets Lac de Gaube North Rive

The jewel of this hike is Lake Gaube , after an approach march in the forest which makes its discovery even more fantastic.

A wonderful site in any season: in summer, its azure blue reflects the surrounding vertices; In winter under the snow, it is a large immaculate expanse, which contrasts with the relief and the forest.

The lake is overlooked in the east by the Pic Mayouret (2688m), to the northwest Le Pic de Gaube (2377m) and to the southeast the Grand Pic des Paloumeres (2720m). In the background, the Vignemale massif, the highest peak in the French Pyrenees (3298m).Chalet La Source Cauterets Lac de Gaube Winter

By extending the hike, we reach the Oulettes refuge which offers a magnificent view of the northern face of the vignemale and its 800 -meter wall.

Chalet La Source Cauterets VignemaleThe word "oulettes" means "small pots", an allusion to the topography of the site.
The foot of the north face of the vignemale indeed forms a small bowl in which the Oulettes de Gaube glacier , in which we distinguish impressive crevices.

Access

Go to the Puntas plateau, 7 km from Cauterets, by car (large paid parking) or by shuttle from Cauterets, or even on foot by the Cascades path .
Depending on the weather conditions, access is possible in winter, under the snow, on foot or in snowshoes.

Itinerary

The route takes the GR10 (red and white markup) which passes through Lake Gaube and then climbs to the Oulettes refuge.

Once the Puntas building has passed, you go up by the path on the right, which follows the Gave de Gaube.
Just before the Spanish Pont waterfall, we take the direction of the lake by climbing through the forest, always along the Gave, crossing several torrents in passing.

At the end of the forest, at 1666m, you can make a small hook to reach a tray or spreads the little lake of the Huats.
We then continue the ascent in the forest, to get out of 15 minutes before reaching the banks of the lake. We can then follow the lake by the right but it is not possible to go around it.

The descent on the Spanish bridge is made by the same path as in the climb.

Duration and difficulty

Until Lac de Gaube (1725m): count 1h15 and 265m D+ from the parking lot in Puntas (1460m). The trail is relatively easy, well marked, but has some fairly high steps.
For people who have difficulty climbing, the solution will then be to take the Puntas gondola and then the Gaube Lake chairlift, which leads to 15 minutes from the lake.
Until the Oulettes refuge (2151m) : count 1h15 and 430m D+ additional on a rocky path, from Lake de Gaube. In total it will therefore be 5 hours round trip excluding break, from the parking lot of Puntas.

Variants for large walkers

From the rail and even from the center of Cauterets: reach the Spanish bridge by the famous Chemin des Cascades .
From the Spanish bridge: take the lakes circuit of the Marcadau valley , allowing to join the lakes of the embarage, the Pourtet and Nère.
From the Oulettes refuge: reach the lake of Estom by the Col d'Araillé.

Rando: The Cascades Chemin

Chalet La Source Cauterets Cascade du LutourNo less than 8 magnificent waterfalls on this Cauterets hike at the Pont d'Espagne.

A great experience, which will be very different depending on the time of the year:

Quiet at the end of the summer, where the photographers will feast as close as possible to the water rides.

Very invigorating on the contrary in the spring, the melting of the snow, with roaring rumbles and a good crush guaranteed!

What are you going to see during this hike?

As its name suggests, this circuit is punctuated by magnificent waterfalls, all as beautiful as each other, the first on the Gave de Lutour and all the others on the Gave de Jéret. This torrent is the result of Reunion, on the site of the Pont d'Espagne, Gave de Gaube and Gave du Marcadau. 4 km below, he confused with the Gave de Lutour à la Raillare, forming with him the Gave de Cauterets. Following the names of the Gaves, it's always a bit complicated:) ...

Going up from Cauterets you will see the following waterfalls:

The Lutour waterfall (intro photo): high steep waterfall, which is observed very well from the bridge that crosses this Gave, a little further downstream.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Cascade de MauhouratThe Mauhourat waterfall (right-wing photo): above the thermal baths of the Griffons à la Raillare, it is a beautiful waterfall on a very flat rock. The sulfur odor is very noticeable.
Before climbing further, take a few minutes to visit the Mauhourat cave, on the other bank of the Gave. From the imposing and curious worked grid, we can clearly see the old "thermal refreshment bar" where the sulfur source arrived.

The Escane Gat waterfall, where the torrent comes out at full speed of a strangulation in the rock (Escane-Gat means a cat Four!) Then made a few rebounds after a large basin.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Ceriset CascadeThe ceriset or cerisey waterfall (left -wing photo), with impressive flow, with its huge rock balance at the top.

The Pouey Bacou waterfall : one of the rare waterfalls which can be approached very close, allowing beautiful photos.

The little cascade of Pas de l'Ours, famous for its "pots", large round holes in the rock - also arousing various legends as they look like a giant bear imprint!

The Boussès waterfall , again very lively because they are very conceded; You will be refreshed there by the spray!

Chalet La Source Cauterets Cascade du Pont DespagneAnd finally the large C ascade of the Pont d'Espagne (right), where the Gaves de Gaube and the Marcadau meet.

Here is born the Gave de Jéret, in a scum bubble. In the spring, the power of the torrent is absolutely dizzying! On the other hand, if the water flow is low, you can access the foot of this fall by going up the watercourse by the right and crossing the Gave.

Arrived at the Pont d'Espagne, you can take a break at the excellent restaurant L'Hotellerie du Pont d'Espagne, whose large terrace is located just opposite the magnificent waterfall.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Sarah BernhardtJust before the Spanish bridge, near the road, the torrent gives itself a small respite and develops a small island between its two arms. This greenery oasis was baptized Ile Sarah Bernhardt .

Indeed, the star who had his quarters in Cauterets, would have got into the habit of coming to rest on this island and walk there his pet panther (!), Leaving his luxurious Dion Bouton car on the side of the road ...

The whole route is magnificent , in the undergrowth, in the shade of large mossy trees and huge blocks of granite. Look at your feet well: in this fresh and humid ecosystem, you could meet frogs and salamanders !

Access

The hike can start from Cauterets (altitude 950m) on the right bank of the jéret, from Chemin des Fères, on the eastern slope of Cauterets (Pyrehaute mountain) and thus join the Raillère (1033m).

You can also go directly from the mockery , accessible by shuttle or by car; The parking lot is free but often there are people. Access is below the thermal baths of the Griffons, a panel indicates "path of the waterfalls".

Itinerary

From Cauterets: Behind the thermal baths of Caesar, climb on the path of Queen Hortense. After the old thermal baths of Pauze Vieux, take the staircase which joins the Chemin des Fiers and follow the direction "La Fruitière". Leave the Fathers path towards La Raillère. We cross the Gave du Lutour on a small bridge downstream of the waterfall.

At the level of the Raillère: Take the path that runs along the Gave de Jéret. The route is carried out on the GR10, well marked (red and white) in the forest on the left bank of the Gave. After the ceriset waterfall, we leave the bridge on the left and continue straight.

For the return from the Spanish bridge: descend by the same path to the rail. To descend to Cauterets, take Chemin Demontzey, behind the old thermal baths in La Raillère.

Duration and difficulty

Count two good hours for 5 km and 550m elevation from Cauterets (950m) to the Pont d'Espagne (1500m).

This hike requires good physical condition and good shoes , because it climbs and there are high steps. Please note, the path can be very slippery, it is even sometimes closed in winter.
In summer, it is a particularly pleasant hike because it is well shaded . It is however recommended to leave in Tô t to enjoy it without too many people.

Possibility of going back down by bus.

Variants for large walkers

Extend the hike to Lake Gaube: we add 1h15 climb and 265m of elevation gain… and other magnificent waterfalls!

Do not hesitate to come and stay at the Chalet La Source to enjoy these wonders!

Trail preparation: white trails

Chalet La Source Cauterets Banned White TrailThe white trail or snow trail is another effort, another challenge, another mountain.

It is the grayery of changing its habits and discovering nature in a different light, the fun side of running in the snow ...

But it is also, specific difficulties that should be well anticipated and preparing, even for a well -trained runner.

Here is everything you need to know to properly prepare your 1st white trail.

Anticipate the difficulties specific to white trail

Chalet La Source Cauterets Trail White Pont Despagne

The supports: they are unstable on slippery surfaces, with a masked relief by snow and less intensely lit.

Fatigue: it arrives faster because of the cold and the difficulty of progressing in the snow, added to a little stress caused by the fear of falling ...

Hydration: it deserves special attention because the dry and cold air dries up quickly, while the body feels less the need to drink than in summer. There is also the problem of the cold temperature of food and drinks.

The outfit must be well managed during the effort, protecting its ends from the risk of frostbite linked to vasoconstriction.

What physical preparation?

Chalet La Source Cauterets Night White TrailObviously: training to run on snow , as much as possible!
In the snow, you have to lift the knees more and adopt a shorter stride, so as not to go up too quickly in heart rate.
In the race, take more time than usual to be perfectly heated, and to properly adapt the stride to the situation of the moment.

Train to run at the front lamp , to adjust your lamp well, know where to look and read the relief under this lighting.

In general physical preparation (PPG), working the ischios: indeed running in the snow is like running in the sand, there is no rebound. The muscular power requested to propel itself is therefore greater, added to the energy necessary to find its balance on unstable supports.

Also work on proprioception to improve your support (work on board).

Without forgetting that an organic and medical check up is never useless!

Nutrition and hydration

Increase the frequency of sockets compared to its usual needs, because fatigue and dehydration come faster. Drink before the feeling of thirst, and even to warm up, in small sips.

Increase the share of slow carbohydrates in the power to keep the glycogen stock high, because the thrill consumes a lot of carbohydrates.

Chalet La Source Cauterets Trail White HydrationProtect your drinks or gels: too cold, not only are they difficult to ingest, but they can also cause dental pain or in the belly.

A few little tips well known to trailers:
- Leaving with warm
- Place a hand heating in a waterproof bag in your can
- use a saline drink, to the point of jelly lower than water
- protect its hydration under a layer of Clothing
- Wrap the tube and pacifier in neoprene
- if it is very cold, favor solid foods easier to ingest.

 The equipment

Chalet La Source Cauterets Chains Shoes TrailWaterproof with high cloning trail shoes (4-6 mm), which can be completed by tips or chains, and waterproof gaiters.

Three layers for the outfit: a thermal layer near the body, an insulating and hot layer, and a windbreaker or a waterproof jacket for warm-up and the after-cours.
In the race, you have to know how to undress according to the intensity of the effort to avoid significant sweating, allow the evacuation of sweat and thus escape dehydration and cooling.

The sticks, if authorized and useful, will be the same as in summer trail and will be just equipped with a wide washer for better lift on snow.

Light gloves and a hat.

Without forgetting, some light safety equipment: whistle and survival coverage at least, also to adapt according to the race regulations.

The 2024 white trails agenda around Cauterets is updated on this site.

Do not hesitate to stay at the chalet the source to prepare or practice your shopping.

Good white trails ... and don't get cold!
